Though the function of books hasn’t changed from the first codex all the way to the first iPad, a vast number of techniques have been used through the centuries. Different ways to hold the pages together and to make covers translate into hundreds of variations in sewing techniques, the shape and thickness of boards, headbanding styles, covering materials, cornering methods, lettering and decorating styles, etc. Pictured here are a few of those techniques.
